My freedom of creative expression requires different applications while composing each painting. These creative approaches vary depending on form, lighting, color, location, and mood inspired by the subject. One beauty to me is to infuse a realistic look in landscapes with loose painterly strokes, creating the illusion of reality.
In art school a fellow student had painted every hair on a dog for an assigment,
the professor picked up the artwork and ripped it in half, saying, “to show every hair is why we have cameras; create the illusion!"the professor insisted. I want my paintings to communicate creative expression without limits; a brief moment to experience the imagination and creative process that I enjoy, not copy every hair on the dog’s back.--- Rob Hill
Growing up as a young child, Rob enjoyed sculpting mud figures out of North Carolina red clay. At the age of
10 he started painting in tempera and watercolors, creating small art cards of vivid color and subject matter. Rob would take these to school and share them with schoolmates. When he turned 12, private oil painting lessons helped develop his passion for painting.
From ECU, Rob earned his BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration with a minor in Painting from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Following ECU, Rob attended The University of North Carolina, Greensboro NC, to work on his MFA in painting. For the past 20 years Rob has run his own design business, and enjoys painting from 3 to 5 days a week.
